    Bristol Rendering FAQ's

How long will the new render last, and can it handle the unpredictable Bristol weather?

We get asked this all the time because Bristol weather is honestly all over the place. Between the coastal wind whipping up the Avon and the endless winter drizzle, older houses take an absolute battering.

The short answer is yes. We use modern silicone and monocouche renders that are genuinely water repellent but still let the walls breathe. Instead of soaking in, rainwater just runs straight off the surface and actually washes the dirt away with it. Done right, this stuff will easily protect your home for decades, and we back that up with a proper written guarantee.

There is nothing worse than paying for a nice-looking house, only to see it turn green or crack a few years later.

We see it a lot around the South West. Usually, it happens because someone used cheap sand and cement or skipped the prep work.

We do things a bit differently. We use highly flexible silicone renders that expand and contract with the heat and cold, which pretty much stops those annoying hairline cracks. We also embed a strong fibreglass mesh into the base coat for extra strength.

Plus, the premium materials we use have built-in resistance to algae and mould, keeping it looking fresh without you having to constantly scrub it.

Yes, it really can make a noticeable difference. Bristol is full of beautiful older properties, particularly those solid brick Victorian and Edwardian houses, but they leak heat like a sieve.

If keeping the house warm and cutting down on gas bills is a priority for you, we usually recommend pairing the new render with External Wall Insulation (EWI).

Think of it like wrapping a thick thermal blanket around the outside of your property. It stops the draughts dead in winter and keeps the place cooler in summer.

It does cost a bit more upfront, but it pays for itself pretty quickly when you look at your energy savings.

Let’s be honest, having any building work done at your house or business is going to cause some noise. But we go out of our way to keep the disruption to an absolute minimum. We treat your property like it is our own. Before we even open a tub of render, we spend ages masking up your windows, doors, pipes, and patio so nothing gets ruined.

We keep the site tidy, sweep up at the end of every day, and give you a clear timeline so you know exactly who is turning up and when. For commercial jobs, we can even work around your operating hours so your business doesn’t skip a beat.

For most houses in Bristol, rendering falls under what the council calls Permitted Development, which means you do not need to apply for planning permission.

However, Bristol has loads of lovely conservation areas and listed buildings in places like Clifton, Redland, and Montpelier. If you live in one of these spots, the rules can be a bit stricter. Because we work all year round locally, we know the Bristol City Council rules inside out.

When we pop round to quote, we will let you know exactly where you stand and can even point you towards heritage-approved, breathable materials if your house needs them.
